VITAMIN D AND SUNLIGHT
Did you know VITAMIN D is also known as the SUNSHINE VITAMIN? And did you know that the sun’s UV radiation is both the main cause of skin cancer but the best natural source for vitamin D? Therefore, taken in the right amount would be greatly beneficial and bad if its insufficient.
Our body produces vitamin D naturally when it’s directly exposed to sunlight and also naturally present in a very few food. However, the best way to obtain it is to spend atleast ten to fifteen minutes in the sun for twice a week without sunscreen for an adequate amount that our body needs. Vitamin D plays an important role in maintaining bone strength and keeping our body healthy.
So what is Vitamin D3 then?.
Well, when UVB light from the sun strikes the skin, humans synthesize vitamin D3, and it is the most “natural” form. Human beings do not make vitamin D2, and most oil-rich fish such as salmon, mackerel, and herring contains vitamin D3. Regardless of which form you use, your body must convert it into an active form, and vitamin D3 is converted five times faster than vitamin D2.
Therefore, a little exposure to the sun goes a long way and always appreciate those melanin that actually protects your skin from the harmful effects of the UV radiation!
