Neurobics. The new science of exercising. Study shows that it can help reduce the risk of major diseases such as Alzheimers and Dementia. Or any other further brain function disorders or cognitive changes as a result of ageing.
To understand the basic reason why we should apply Neurobics to our daily exercise. First of all, we must understand how our brain works and also how brain ageing can lead to dementia. This helps us gives a clear idea why its essential to adapt it as our daily exercise along with our regular exercises that we commonly do because maintaining our brain is just us important as our overall health.
So,here’s how our brain works.
Our brains contains billions of nerve cells arranged in patterns to coordinate thoughts, emotions, behaviour, movement and sensations. The system works by a complicated highway that occur to be the main connection between the brain and the rest of our body. Sounds simple but its more complex that you may think. Our brains are so good that they can even do their work just in split seconds! How amazing is that. They can even protect us from harmful situations. For instance, to prevent our hand from the devastating cause of burn when we accidently touch a hot frying pan. Our brains works at instance sending light speed signals to make sure our hand is immediately withdrawn from the pan. And this too works in split seconds!.
Now, lets understand how ageing and lack of brain exercise leads us to some diseases. Lets take Dementia for an example. Physiologically, our brain’s capacity gradually reduces as we start aging. And along with this, blood flow to our brains also decreases. Just like any other cells in our body, our nerves too will start to shrink and maybe miss some of their normal connections with other nerve cells. When this happens, we may start loosing certain of our normal cognitive functions. Age alterations are believed to be the cultprit behind the deterioration in cognitive funtion in many people. People tend to have certain memory losses, however when we start to experience a clear cut or definite loss memory is not a normal thing.
Now lets get down to the term Neurobics. The term that is used for an exercise that applies to our brain is called Neurobics and it involves all our common senses namely sight, sound, touch, taste and smell.
What does this means ?
Well, our brain basically has gotten used to our normal regular routine tasks subsconciously. Hence, making our brain works less each time and reduces the communications between the brain cells. In a long term, this connection weakens and could affect our brain cells. And together with ageing it may lead to some changes as we mentioned earlier.
In order for us to strengthen this connection, we need to break all our common routine and replace it with a slightly different routine that we dont commonly do. Our brain needs new challenges and underused nerve pathways for our connections get activated. Thus, this activity becomes exercise and sort of like mastering a new software program.
Neurobics is a form of exercise that does not require any sort of machines or equipments like those in gym. This can be done almost anywhere and at anytime without putting a hole in our pockets. In turn, our brain manufacturers its own nutrients that helps to stregthens this nerve cells.
How Neurobics are carried out?
Basically Neurobics requires you to do some things you may not have been doing on a regular basis or experiencing something new involving your five senses on a daily basis.
Here’s some example:
- Take a new route than your usual route
- Change your dominant hand to your non dominant hand in activites such as writing, cooking, shaving, brushing teeth etc.
- Listen to other genre music than your usuals while inhaling scents like mint or lavendar.
- Closing eyes and identify your food by smell, taste and touch.
- Wake up to a different aroma than your usual favourite . Smelling vanilla, citrus, peppermint, or rosemary.
- Taking up a new hobby thats different from your usual senses . Like from playing guitar to painting.
- Tie your shoe laces differently.
And many more!
Therefore, keeping your mind energized and active with new set of challenges is one of the best ways to preserve and strengthens our brain circuits.
